For the Family, Fair/Festival, Ethnic, Community Event

World and Eye is proud to announce the Fort Lauderdale Story Slam at the Hallandale Afro Caribbean Festival. The storytelling contest will be held on the festival’s second day, Saturday June 16, from 2-4 PM at the Hallandale Beach Library, 300 S. Federal Highway, Hallandale Beach, FL 33009. Tell your story. We are searching for storytellers ready to win spectacular prizes. The Grand Prize winner will receive a one-night weekend stay in a water-view deluxe room at The Diplomat Beach Resort (valued at $500) and a gift card to a local merchant. Two runners up will receive gift packages from West Elm (valued at $150 each) and a gift card to a local merchant. The Story Slam will be a competition between seven pre-selected storytellers on the theme, “Island Spice.” Novice or professional, come tell your 5-7 minute true, personal story. Stories can span the range of human experience, from the comical to the deeply profound. A panel of three judges will choose the winners. To apply to tell a story in the contest, submit your story online at: or call Helen Reynolds (954-279-0994) / Jean Minuchin (954-540-9897) or email The festival: The Afro-Caribbean Fest is a free festival to celebrate the diversity of Afro-Caribbean voices, culture and cuisine. Like the storytelling competition, the festival theme is “Island Spice” and the crowd will be treated to a powerful dose coming from authentic Caribbean food truck and street vendors, the Bahamas Junkanoo Shakers, Resurrection Steel Drum Band and DJ Johnnie Powell. Festival goers will experience virtual reality demos, a healthy food demo by Flipany, live music, and dynamic, interactive storytelling. The event is co-sponsored by Broward County Libraries and the City of Hallandale Beach. Additional sponsorship and support is provided by World and Eye Arts Center, West Elm, The Diplomat Beach Resort, and Friends of Hallandale Beach Library. #HBCaribbeanFest
