Summer Jazz Series – Christian Sands at Faena Theater

Five-time GRAMMY nominee and singularly talented pianist Christian Sands will take the stage of Faena Theater on June 20 for a spectacular performance as part of Faena’s second annual Summer Jazz Series, hosted by legendary percussionist Sammy Figueroa. Influenced by a range of musical styles, from Afro-Cuban rhythms and hip-hop beats, to jazz and dirty blues, Christian Sands will perform tracks from his debut Mack Avenue Records album, “Reach,” an original recording co-produced by GRAMMY Award-winning producer Al Pryor and famed bassist Christian McBride. Slated to become a household name among jazz artists and enthusiasts alike, Christian Sands will tell his personal story of self-discovery and the exploration of new musical territory for a night of truly immersive jazz performances. Faena Theater’s Summer Jazz Series is a five-month music event curated by GRAMMY-nominated producer Rachel Faro and hosted by legendary percussionist and fellow GRAMMY nominee, Sammy Figueroa, with support from WDNA 99.9FM Radio. Legendary percussionist and two-time GRAMMY nominee Sammy Figueroa joins rising Brazilian jazz singer Mirella Costa on stage at Faena Theater for an exciting performance on July 25th as part of Faena’s second annual Summer Jazz Series. Having played alongside some of music’s greatest stars, including David Bowie, Mariah Carey, Quincy Jones and more, Sammy Figueroa remains one of the world’s great percussionists whose talent spans genres and generations to present a rich trove of Latin, Brazilian and Venezuelan jazz virtuoso flair. Figueroa, who boasts two GRAMMY nominations for “Best Latin Jazz Album,” will perform alongside up-and-coming songstress Mirella Costa. Recently awarded “Best New Artist of the Year” for her first solo record, “Minha Arca,” Costa has gained international acclaim for her inspired renditions of jazz classics and her own contemporary arrangements. Summer Jazz Series – Matthew Whitaker at Faena Theater

On August 15th, make your way to the opulent Faena Theater to witness prodigious jazz pianist Matthew Whitaker in concert as part of Faena’s second annual Summer Jazz Series. At just 17 years old, this gifted musician has achieved international acclaim for his awe-inspiring talent and performed across the world in impressive venues, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and the renowned Apollo Theater where, at age 10, he opened for Stevie Wonder. In addition to his on-stage acts, Whitaker has charmed millions through televised performances on NBC’s “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” and FOX’s “Showtime at the Apollo,” on which he won first place. A New Jersey native, Matthew Whitaker was born three months premature and later diagnosed with Retinopathy of Prematurity, which caused his blindness. With perfect pitch, he learned to play piano through listening and later became versed in Braille music during his musical education at The Harlem School of the Arts and Manhattan School of Music’s Pre-College Jazz program. At age 13, he became the youngest artist ever endorsed by Hammond, and at age 15, Whitaker was named a Yamaha Artist, becoming the youngest musician to join the stellar group of jazz pianists.
