The Gipsy Kings featuring Nicolas Reyes and Tonino Baliardo

Latin/Salsa, Rock, Jazz, World

Flamenco, Latin rhythms and Western pop come together in the irresistible music of The Gipsy Kings, the GRAMMY-winning, chart-topping world music superstars. For more than 30 years now, the Gipsy Kings have captured the world’s imagination, ever since the release of their platinum-selling album in 1987, which included hits like "Djobi Djoba," "Bamboléo," and the romantic ballad, "Un Amor." Since then, this party-starting ensemble has toured around the globe and sold 20 million albums worldwide. Their 2013 LP, Savor Flamenco, won that year’s GRAMMY Award for Best World Music Album. Led by songwriters Nicolas Reyes (lead vocals) and Tonino Baliardo (lead guitar), The Gipsy Kings is comprised of electrifying flamenco, salsa, and pop musicians from Arles and Montpellier (in the south of France). Performing in their native language, Gitane (a mixture of Spanish, French, and Catalan), the Gipsy Kings are credited with bringing Catalan rumba, a pop-oriented music derived from traditional flamenco, to new audiences around the world. From the beginning, their sound has reflected the constant travel and diverse influences of the gypsy heritage, yet they have never lost their intense connection to the traditional flamenco of their heritage, keeping a spotlight on Tonino Baliardo’s fluid guitar work and Nicolas Reyes’s powerful vocals.

Gipsy Kings

World,Latin/Salsa,Pop

The best-selling French band in history, the Gipsy Kings is among the best-known non-English speaking groups in the U.S. (the band’s language is the Gypsy dialect of gitane). Since the 1987 release of the international hit single "Bamboleo," the Gipsy Kings have sold more than 20 million albums worldwide — more than 4 million in the United States alone. The band’s vigorous guitar work and passionate vocals are the trademarks of an indigenous musical tradition known as “rumba flamenca.” This group of actual French Gypsies gained popularity in the late '80s blending exotica with familiar European middle-of-the-road sounds. The Gipsy Kings have provided a steady stream of hits to Billboard’s world music, Latin, and pop charts. The ensemble’s music has been used in numerous motion pictures, including Peter Weir’s "Fearless" and Joel and Ethan Coen’s "The Big Lebowski."

Miami City Ballet's Program One

Classical Dance, World Dance

Oct 18 - Oct 20, 2019 at Adrienne Arsht Center. Stravinsky Violin Concerto (Balanchine/Stravinsky). Mercuric Tidings (Taylor/Schubert). Slaughter on Tenth Avenue (Balanchine/Rodgers). George Balanchine’s Slaughter on Tenth Avenue headlines this program with a hilarious parody of hijinks and high kicks, gangsters and cops in this ballet about a tap dancer and the impossible stripper he falls in love with. Balanchine’s sassy and spirited choreography and Richard Rodgers’ tantalizing Broadway score open the season full of laughter in a 1930s speakeasy. Balanchine’s plotless masterpiece, Stravinsky Violin Concerto, bookends this program with Stravinsky’s timeless score setting the stage for all-out dancing and technique in its purest form. Balancing out the program is a tribute to the late Paul Taylor with his masterwork, Mercuric Tidings – a celebration of “body in motion” in this “exhilarating, blisteringly fast dance,” the Miami Herald acclaims.

Mahler himself called his Fifth Symphony a “foaming, roaring, raging sea of sound.” It begins simply enough, with a lone trumpet fanfare, but quickly explodes into one of music’s most passionate, thrilling symphonies. The Adagietto is probably the single most famous piece by Mahler—Leonard Bernstein played it at JFK’s funeral, and it is liberally used as the soundtrack for the film “Death in Venice.” A performance by The Cleveland Orchestra of this monumental, superheated symphony is not to be missed.

Michael Barenboim & West-Eastern Divan Ensemble

Classical

MICHAEL BARENBOIM & WEST-EASTERN DIVAN ENSEMBLE. ABOUT THE ARTISTS. In 1999, Daniel Barenboim and Edward Said founded the West-Eastern Divan as a workshop for Israeli, Palestinian and other Arab musicians. Within the workshop, individuals who had only interacted with each other through the prism of war found themselves living and working together as equals. As they listened to each other during rehearsals and discussions, they traversed deep political and ideological divides. Though this experiment in coexistence was intended as a one-time event, it quickly evolved into a legendary orchestra. Three years after it was established, the orchestra was given a home in Seville by the regional Spanish government of Andalusia. The area’s history as a center for sustained coexistence among Muslims, Christians and Jews in Europe continues in the West-Eastern Divan’s rehearsals and discussions.
