Miami City Ballet: Dances At A Gathering

Classical Dance

Program Two highlights two 20th century masterworks by Jerome Robbins. Dances at a Gathering, featuring ten dancers and live Chopin piano music, has been acclaimed as one of his greatest ballets, a profound yet light-hearted tribute to dancing and to dancers. This is the work that marked Robbins' return to classical dance following his series of Broadway triumphs - West Side Story, Fiddler on the Roof, Gypsy, et al. And then Brahms/ Handel, a unique collaboration between two choreographic geniuses who were also close friends: Robbins and Twyla Tharp. It's a whirl of excitement - clever, dynamic, highest-octane - that The New York Times rightly acclaimed as "unlike anything in the ballet repertory." Dances at a Gathering (Robbins/Chopin) Brahms/Handel - Company Premiere (Robbins, Tharp/Brahms) Pre-show lectures one hour prior to showtime. Late seating holds vary by program. Buddy Guy

Blues,Rock

Whether blues guitar legend Buddy Guy is playing a lick behind his back, picking strings with his teeth, “singing with gentle menace or bending new curves into a blue note” (The New York Times), his electrifying live performances showcase his incendiary style that altered the direction of the instrument. A pioneer of electric blues, Guy’s name is as synonymous with the great generation of musicians he played with (Muddy Waters; Howlin’ Wolf) as with the rock titans he influenced (Jimi Hendrix; Eric Clapton). An American treasure with a career spanning six decades, his recent work is some of his richest music yet, confirming that “Guy is the greatest living Chicago bluesman, and one of the most influential guitar players ever” (Rolling Stone).
